Wilco West and Steve Hellmann:
The two of us go way back to the early 1970s. Bill, that's what we called
him back then, was an All-State water polo player who played for me at the
old GLSA and Lexington Aquatic Center. Bill was a young and wild teenager
back then and water polo was great for both of us. I had just returned from
Vietnam as a Marines officer and was very happy to be back working with
young aggressive teenagers. Bill's dad, Dr. Wilco West, and his mother,
Betty West, were very supportive of me for exposing their sons to water
polo. Bill's two younger brothers, Bob and John, were also outstanding water
polo players. Bill and I are very patriotic. I was asked by the FBI back
in the 70's to evaluate or to recommend Bill as a potential Navy officer.
I remember writing to them about Bill being a very determined person, sometimes
wild, but I would want him at my side if combat was in the working. Bill
served as a Navy fighter pilot for many years, and I am very proud of him. |

Me with
daughter Amy (Hellmann) Harrison. Both of us have just rejoined the Masters
swimming program. This was Amy's first meet since returning and I thought
she swam very well and improved her times more than expected.
