Wildcat Masters
Swim Team

Thanks to all who participated in the Wildcat Masters Invitational this year, either as a competitor or as a volunteer. This year was especially meaningful, as it was in memory of our dear friend and teammate, Dave Maehr. Dave's Wildcat pawprint T-shirt, including a photo of him holding a bear cub, was the meet T-shirt. We named the 1650 freestyle event "The Maehr Mile," and it will be forever called that. Dave's training partner and friend, Ken Calvert, spoke about Dave before the meet began:

From today on, this event in this meet will be known as "The Maehr Mile," after David Maehr, our friend who was taken from us last year. Some of you may be wondering, who was this guy?

  • He was our resident curmudgeon. The guy who would pull pranks like doing a cannonball 6 inches in front of your face as you were warming up. The guy who was always griping about something, or teasing somebody, or giving somebody a hard time. He made workouts more interesting and fun.
  • He was the guy who would regale us with locker-room tales of tracking and tagging bears down on Pine Mountain -- where the picture on the back of the shirt was taken. See, he was a conservation biologist and cared deeply about our environment. He studied wild animals -- including wildcats. Dave was always complaining that the pawprint UK uses as a logo doesn't look right. (And he would know.) That's why the one on your T-shirt looks a little different: It's the real thing.
  • He was my lane mate. The guy who, if he was there, I knew I'd get a good workout. We'd be doing, say, a set of 200s, and coming in together most of the time. But I knew that at some point, late in the set, he would kick it up a notch, and I'd see him start to pull in front. If I caught up, he'd kick it up another notch. If I rose to the challenge, he'd do it again. Lots of times he put me in my place (even after he had his hip replaced), but we always finished the set knowing we'd gotten our money's worth.
  • Dave always swam the 1650. This was his event, even though he (like many of you, I'm sure) hated and dreaded it. He holds the team record in the 1000 and 1650 in three age groups, from 40 to 54. But that's the kind of guy he was. He wanted to challenge himself. So from today on, this event will be officially his event.

So swim strong and have fun -- that's what Dave would've done! And if somebody does a cannonball 6 inches in front of your face during warmup, they're just remembering Dave.
