Kentucky Masters Swimming

Kentucky Local Masters Swimming Committee

Kentucky Masters Swimming is the governing body for Masters swimming in the Kentucky LMSC (Local Masters Swimming Committee). We subscribe to the founding principles of United States Masters Swimming: to encourage and promote improved physical fitness and health in adults, to offer adults the opportunity to participate in a lifelong fitness and/or competitive swimming program, to encourage organizations and communities to establish and sponsor Masters swimming programs, and to enhance fellowship and camaraderie among Masters swimmers.

General Information

The KY-LMSC covers the geographic area of the state of Kentucky, with the addition of Floyd and Clark Counties, Indiana (de facto suburbs of Louisville). In 2005, we had 521 swimmers, ranging in age from 18 to 93.

Record-breaking performances at IGLA meet!
Five SKY swimmers participated in the IGLA championship. Craig Pickering broke Kentucky SCM records in the men's 30-34 400, 800 and 1500 free, the 200 fly, and the 400 IM. Michelle Ward broke the women's 40-44 records for the 200 fly and 400 IM. Meg Smath broke the women's 50-54 records for the 50 and 100 breast. Vicki Catlin won first place in all five of her events, and Mike Neal just missed a couple of LMSC records. Complete results for Kentucky swimmers here.

Dave Maehr: In memoriam
Wildcat Masters swimmer Dave Maehr was killed in a small plane crash in Florida on June 20 while doing research on black bears. Dave was a conservation biologist with the UK Department of Forestry, and he loved distance swimming. Please keep Dave's family in your prayers, and think of him the next time you swim a 1650. The University of Kentucky Forestry Department's website has information on a memorial service and fund for Dave. A Lexington Herald-Leader article about Dave describes his work.

SKY wins One Hour Postal!
SKY, or should I say the SKY's the limit!!! Go to www.usms.org/longdist/ldnats08/1hrresultsteams.pdf to find the team results for the One Hour Postal. Swim Kentucky Masters took the Large Team category with 337,795 yards over Masters of South Texas and three other teams in the 50-99 swimmer range. In fact, our average of 3,753 yards per swimmer beat every team in the Extra Large Category other than UCLA, which compiled 411,035 yards with 108 swimmers. MOST had the least yardage of the four teams in the Extra Large category and we beat those other 3 teams on the yardage/swimmer totals.

www.usms.org/longdist/ldnats08/ will get you to individual and relay results. Of note, SKY did win one relay, the Mixed 25+ Relay totaling 19,225 yards with David Kuendig, Jose Manuel Nieto, Carolyn Harris, and Leslie Weeter. None of our other five relays finished worse than 7th.

Great job (and fun) by everyone. Let's have even greater participation the this fall's 3000-6000 event sanctioned by Kentucky Masters and run by Swim Louisville Masters-U of L.
